Ah, date night. A chance for you and your spouse to reserve a few special hours just for the two of you. A chance for romance, a chance to escape your busy schedules, and a chance to pamper yourselves. For my husband and I, it’s a chance to take a break from running after our somehow-always-sticky and usually-very-demanding two-year-old. (Side note: We love our daughter. She’s the greatest, I swear!) But life gets crazy, babysitters don’t come cheap, and sadly, date night just doesn’t happen very often.
I know we need and deserve quality one-on-one time. All couples do! Whether you’ve been together five months, five years, or fifty years – date night should be considered a necessity, not a luxury. So I’m learning to get creative. Once a week, we’re tucking our kid into bed and going on a date, in our very own house. Here are my top ten stay at home date night ideas…
1. Movie night
It’s a classic for a reason. Break out the popcorn, try not to spend too long arguing over what to watch, and get cozy on the couch.
2. Cook together
Pick out a recipe and cook a meal together. It’s fun working as a team in the kitchen, and you’ll both enjoy and appreciate your hard work once dinner is served.
3. Break out the board games
This is a go-to in my house. We’ve got about a million to choose from, and board games are a great way to encourage a little healthy competition
4. Take turns giving each other back rubs and foot massages
Light a few candles, unwind with a glass of wine, and take turns pampering yourselves.
5. Watch a sports game together
Crack a beer, indulge in your favourite game-time snacks, and cheer your team on. Place a friendly wager on which side will win and make your own game of it.Try a stay at home date night with your special someone. #love Click To Tweet
6. Get crafty and decorate mugs
Pick up a couple white mugs and coloured sharpies from the dollar store and get creative! It’ll be fun to sip your coffee out of your works of art the next morning while remembering how much fun you had making them.
7. Create your bucket lists
Think about all your dreams and wishes and write them down. Then enjoy planning and talking about which ones you can do together.
8. Make a theme night
Choose a theme and plan the whole night around it. Pick a meal and movie that complement each other. I’m thinking nachos, margaritas, and a viewing of Nacho Libre.
9. Have a backyard or living room picnic
Escape to your own backyard with a blanket and a romantic picnic for two. Your living room can be just as cute and cozy depending on the weather and time of year.
10. Host your own private tasting
Wine, chocolate, whatever your fancy. Grab a few varieties of your favourite guilty pleasure and make a night of it!
So whether it’s budget constraints, timing, or your crazy kids – leave behind the excuses and get started on planning a stay at home date with your special someone.
