I carry an embarrassingly large handbag around with me at all times. Why? Because there is nothing worse than not having a tissue when your toddler has an epic booger taking over her face. Because someone is always thirsty or hungry the second we leave the house (sometimes it’s me). Because pulling out a toy and successfully distracting my bored and whiny daughter while we’re waiting at the doctor’s office makes me feel like a superhero. I guess the short answer is, because I’m a Mom. And when you’re a parent, you don’t just get to pack whatever you might need while you’re out. You’re in charge of packing for the whole dang family.
It’s taken me a little time to figure out what actually needs to be in my Mom bag at all times, but I’ve got it honed down to a science now. Here are 10 things I seriously can’t leave the house without…
Apple slices, crackers, raisins, those freaky yogurts in a tube. Take your pick! Just make sure they’re easy to pass to hungry kids in the backseat, and won’t make too much of a mess as they’re scarfing them down in line at the grocery store.
I don’t know why I waited until I had a baby to start using these magical things. They wipe sticky hands, crumb-covered faces, and clean just about any surface you can imagine. They are an absolute essential.
Diapers/Change of clothes
You can never have too many diapers or too many changes of clothes – especially if you’re dealing with a little one. That one time you don’t bring an excessive amount, will be the one time you really need them.Parenting rule #1: Never, ever leave the house without extra diapers! Click To Tweet
Calendar/Planner – and a pen!
Makes it easy to make plans and write down important upcoming events or appointments while you’re out. Instead of making a mental note and then having it disappear from your brain forever.
I don’t think this one requires an explanation. But you’d be surprised how many times I’m halfway out the door before I realize it’s missing.
One for you and one for the kids. Hydration is kind of a big deal!
This changes depending on what my daughter’s currently obsessed with. It could be a book, her pretend cell-phone, or her Peppa Pig stuffie. Whatever it is, it will come in crazy handy when you’re stuck in traffic, waiting at the dentist, or in a ridiculously long line to renew your car insurance.
Runny noses strike when you least expect them. Be ready. No one likes being the Mom the checkout girl has to hand a pity tissue to.
Mini first aid kit
Get yourself a small ziploc bag and fill it with travel-sized medical must-haves. I’m talking bandaids, neosporin, advil, etc. It will save your life.
I have a chapstick addiction, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I carry at least two different options with me at all times.
Alright, there you have it! The 10 items my giant Mom bag can’t live without. What’s in yours?
