Summer means a lot of time spent outside for you and your family. Being prepared on all of your sun filled adventures is key to protecting your family from damaging sun rays and extreme heat. Here are five things to keep in mind before heading outside this summer:
1. Wear sunglasses
Sunglasses can help protect your children from some common eye conditions that develop later in life. Make sure you choose sunglasses that block 99-100% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays to ensure your child’s eyes are properly protected.
2. Bring a hat
Burns to your scalp can be painful and harmful. Make sure you choose a hat for your child that provides shade for their face, neck, and ears.
3. Apply sunscreen
Sunscreen is an essential item for keeping your family safe and burn-free. Remember to apply an appropriate sunscreen 30 minutes prior to heading outside, and make sure to reapply!
4. Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated is one of the most important things to remember during your summer adventure. The amount of daily water you need increases when you’re in the heat or doing physical activity, so don’t be afraid to pack a lot of water bottles!
5. Take a break
Shade is your best friend. Remind your kids to take a break underneath an umbrella, or find a tree! This will help protect yourself and your family from developing heat exhaustion or heat stroke
A great way to get your kids to understand a bit more about sun safety is by printing this list out and reading it with them! It’s never too early for kids to know how to stay safe during the hot days of summer.
