Just as you need to protect your child’s skin from the sun’s rays, you also need to protect their eyes. Many parents know the importance of putting sunscreen on their children, but most forget how important it is for them to wear sunglasses. In fact, by having your children wear sunglasses you can actually help protect them against some of the more common eye conditions that develop later in life.
Now to answer the question: What kind of sunglasses does my child actually need?
Well, it’s super important that you read the label and find glasses that indicate they block 99-100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays. The colour of the lenses you choose can be based on personal choice, since it doesn’t matter how dark or light the actually lenses of the glasses are (it’s the chemical applied to the lenses that blocks the rays).
Also, try and pick polycarbonate lenses. These type of lenses can take more of wear and tear than other lenses, so they should last a bit longer.
A great way to encourage your child to wear their glasses is for them to pick them out themselves. And since kids usually want to be as cool looking as mom and dad, make sure that you wear your sunglasses too!
