Regardless of whether you and your loved ones are out camping or just going on a day trip to enjoy the sun, hiking is a great go-to summer activity. Never tried? Not a problem – no one ever starts out as a hiking expert! It comes with experience, some research, and the willingness to explore. Here are a compilation of some general tips to keep in mind the next time you’re on a trek!
It’s best if you go with company
Regardless of whether you’ve been on five hikes or fifty hikes, the view at the end is always going to be a lot better when it’s shared between people. Besides, there’s safety in numbers!
Stay on the road that’s often taken
A maintained trail is a safe trail; they’ve been cleared of debris and other hazards to keep you and your family’s hike relatively safe! Be wary of unmarked trails, especially when there are kids in your party, as these trails can be long and require large amounts of physical exertion.
Check the difficulty beforehand
If it’s a well known hiking area, chances are there’s a website available that indicates how hard it would be getting to the end. If websites aren’t available, oftentimes there are maps at the beginning of the trail that can assist you. Make sure that the ability of you and everyone in your party is accounted for; hiking is the most fun when everyone can see it to the end together, after all!
It’s safest to hike when the path is well lit
It’s best to go when you can see all around you! Typically the best times to go hiking are in the morning or mid-afternoon, when the sun can give you and your family some much needed warmth and light.
Stay hydrated and fed as you go
Hiking can use a tremendous amount of energy; take rest stops and small breaks to recharge sufficiently before you head on.
Do your best to stay dry
Working up a sweat is a normal sight for hikes, but excess sweat can make it difficult for your body to regulate its core temperature. Be sure that you and your family each have a small towel handy to keep dry and warm. If necessary, bring an extra shirt to change into.
Hiking is, first and foremost, a fun activity best enjoyed with company. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never gone, or have done it a hundred times! It’s a great way to bond and enjoy nature at its best. The next time you and your loved ones go on a day trip, try to keep these tips in mind so you have fun while also keeping safety in mind!
