With the arrival of summer comes the arrival of heat, and with that, comes the question: How hot is too hot? Here are a few guidelines to help you make that decision before heading outdoors with your family this summer.
Always check your local weather forecast
Whether it comes from a fancy phone app or by listening to your local news channel, it’s always a good idea to determine what the temperature will be like for that particular day before heading out on your summer activities. A great way to stay informed throughout your day is setting up weather alerts on your phone so you’ll always be aware of any extreme weather warnings.
Determine what the heat index is
The heat index is what the temperature actually feels like to the human body. This is calculated by combining the day’s humidity with the air temperature. Quick tip: There are tons of heat index calculators online, you just need to determine what the temperature and humidity is from your local weather forecast.
Heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and burns are just some of the risks that come with being in hot conditions. A general rule for kids is too keep them indoors when outdoor temperatures are over 35-40 ºC, and to avoid having them play outside between the hours of 10am-4pm when the temperatures are at their highest.
Now that you know how to determine a safe temperature for you and your family, go have some fun outdoors!
