As your parents age you may feel like you don’t know how to have fun with them anymore, especially if their health is being affected. Finding fun activities that you can do with your parents is not as difficult as it may seem and can often be done in the comfort of your own home.
Games! Old and New
There are an endless number of exciting games that you can play with your parents. Cards, board games or puzzles are always loaded with fun, but don’t be afraid to bring some new technology into the mix. The Wii system has plenty of hands-on options that your parents will love, or try something different like karaoke! Other activities that are always fun are backyard games like bocce, mini golf, or croquet. They can also be a great way to keep your parents active.
A stroll in the park, walk along the beach or a trip to the mall are excellent ways for you and your parents to go out and have some fun. Find out their favourite hangout spots, restaurants, or interesting movies in town for fun outings. Although it is definitely not necessary to go out every single day, have a plan/schedule or goal to go on a little adventure every so often. Note that it’s important not to overwhelm your parent. A trip to Disneyland will most likely be over-stimulating and exhausting. Check in with how they are feeling and keep it close to home if possible in case of an emergency.
Community Senior Events
Within your community there are most likely many senior events held frequently. Check out exercise classes, art sessions, music festivals and other “senior day” events happening close to you. Finding an event for yourself and your parent(s) may take some researching, but they’re usually popular and loaded with fun.
Sometimes it’s a rainy day and there aren’t many options outside of staying home. If you have a plethora of chores to get done but don’t want to bore your parents, include them! They probably would enjoy helping you out, and chores are way more fun when others are involved. Giving simple tasks can not only help you out but improve overall satisfaction for your parents. Helping you will make them feel good. So give them a chance and make it fun!
There is nothing like pulling out the old photo album and reminiscing about the past. Your parents will love sitting down with you, having a cup of tea, and talking about the good old days when you were smaller and they were full of youth. Telling old stories and poking fun at your terrible fashion statements is always a good time. Evidence shows that reminiscing for the elderly also has a positive effect on the brain, stimulating neurotransmitters like dopamine and improving overall happiness.
Fun is never far away. Even if it takes some creativity it’s always worth it. Whether you need to stay home or have the time to go out, there is always an option for your parent. Research what options are available in your community and search your house for fun things your parents will love to do! What are your favourite activities to do with your parents?
