Why is sleep important?
Sleep is extremely important to our health and well being. When we don’t get enough good quality sleep, we are tired and cranky, short on patience, our bodies don’t heal and our mind and body are definitely not performing as well as they could be.
It’s easy to see how issues with sleep can spill over and impact every other area of our lives. Relationships, job performance, physical health and our emotional state can all be impacted.
Sleep deprivation can actually affect our reaction times and coordination as much as alcohol does, and is even more dangerous if you are drinking alcohol when you’re sleep deprived as the effects are magnified even further.
How much sleep do we need?
Like in everything else, the answer to this question is – it depends. Most adults do best with 7-8 hours of sleep per night, while teenagers need more and older adults often need less. We need more when we’re healing, pregnant, growing (kids & teens) or haven’t slept well for the preceding nights.
Most people will require between 5 and 10 hours of sleep per night. And you’ll have to pay attention to your body to figure out what the ideal amount is for you.
When should we sleep?
Well, again that is a bit different for everyone. I know for me I do best sleeping from about 11pm until 7am. You’ll have to figure out what works best for you.
But here’s what Jessa Gamble has to say about our natural sleep cycle.
