Are you presently concerned about the state of the world? Our shared prospects as inhabitants of this one planet? The future? Your friends, your children and parents—are you worried about them? Do you wake up, late in the night, gripped in your chest by an unquashable fear? (Do you sleep at all?) Do you read the news online and hold your head, fearing it might explode if not otherwise cradled?
If this sounds like you—and frankly it sounds like you—have you considered if and how you can make the world a better place for you and for other people, too? Did you know that you can make the world a better place, as long as you’re willing to get up and do something? Did you know that something needn’t be something grand, like building your own electric car or erecting your own shelter for stray dogs, although if you’ve got the resources for building your own electric car or erecting your own shelter for stray dogs, why aren’t you doing that, like, now?
Have you ever thought to yourself, “It’s hopeless; the world’s problems are too big for me to deal with on my own”? (Why do you doubt yourself so much? Don’t you realize how capable you are?) And what if I told you that you needn’t solve all of the world’s problems? What if I told you were only really responsible for one small, meaningful act a day? And what, to your mind, would count as a small, meaningful act? Here’s one: Have you considered donating your blood? Perhaps you can check out Canada Blood Services and find out where and when you might make a donation? (Did you know you can also donate money to this same organization if you have reservations about donating blood?)
Here’s another: Who in your community are in need of help? What organizations exist to help them? On a related note: What skills or professional talents do you possess that you might employ to help others? If you teach, could you tutor? What kinds of literacy needs exist in your community? If you write, perhaps there’s a non-profit that needs help writing grants to raise funds to help those in need? And if you’re stuck, feeling unsure where to start, maybe you’d like to try check out Volunteer Canada, an organization that helps support volunteerism in Canada?
What are you waiting for?
